Anthropic signs historic Pentagon deal

Claude becomes the first frontier AI model approved for use on classified US military networks. A landmark moment — the US government officially backing Anthropic's AI for national security work.

Turning Point

Feb 2026

The Pentagon demands more. Anthropic refuses.

The deal collapses. The Pentagon wants Claude available for autonomous weapons systems and mass domestic surveillance. Anthropic says no. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth issues an ultimatum. Anthropic refuses again. The Pentagon blacklists Anthropic. Trump orders all federal agencies to stop using Claude.

Anthropic sues the US government

A federal judge rules the blacklisting was "Orwellian and likely retaliatory." Meanwhile Anthropic quietly continues building its most powerful model — one it has decided is too dangerous to release publicly at all.

Project Glasswing — Mythos for the chosen few

Anthropic announces Mythos Preview but restricts access to roughly 200 vetted organisations under Project Glasswing. Amazon, Apple, Google, Microsoft, Nvidia, JPMorgan, the Linux Foundation. Everyone else: nothing. The model is considered too powerful for general release.

Trump orders AI labs to brief the government first

An executive order directs the NSA, Treasury and CISA to build a classified pre-release benchmarking process for frontier AI models within 60 days. The framework is not yet operational when Anthropic launches Fable 5 seven days later.

Launch

Jun 9 2026

Fable 5 launches publicly — Mythos-class for everyone

Anthropic releases Fable 5 to all subscribers. A Mythos-class model with safety guardrails. The most powerful AI ever made available to the general public. It lasts 72 hours.

The Quote

The NSA brief Congress on what Mythos did

Senator Mark Warner, vice chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, tells Congress what General Joshua Rudd — head of the NSA and US Cyber Command — privately told him about an authorised red team assessment of Mythos.

"Mythos broke into almost all of our classified systems. Not in weeks. But in hours."

— Gen. Joshua Rudd, as relayed by Sen. Mark Warner

The same day, Amazon reportedly discovers a jailbreak vulnerability in Fable 5. Two separate crisis points collide on a single afternoon.

Shutdown

Trump orders Fable 5 and Mythos 5 offline

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick sends a letter to Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei. Citing national security concerns and the jailbreak. Ordering both models suspended for all foreign nationals worldwide — including Anthropic's own foreign-national employees. Anthropic cannot verify the nationality of 600 million users, so it shuts both models down for everyone.

The Economist publishes the NSA quote. The internet explodes.

The quote stays under the radar for ten days after Warner says it. Then The Economist publishes it. Within hours it is everywhere. The journalist who wrote it later says it was "a mistake not to add caveats." The NSA has never officially confirmed anything. The claim is secondhand — a senator relaying a private briefing.

100+ security executives push back

An open letter signed by security leaders from Adobe, Zoom, Nvidia, Vercel, Stanford and others demands the ban be lifted. Their argument: banning Fable 5 handcuffs defenders without slowing attackers, who can get the same capabilities from GPT-5.5 and other models without any jailbreak. The government's threat assessment is not supported by the security community.
